Toyota IGS-Pandanet European Go Tour
The Croatian Open Go Championship was held last weekend in the capital of Croatia, Zagreb. 33 contestants took part in the championship, 21 of which being from Croatia. This year's tournament was one of 12 Toyota IGS-Pandanet European Go Tour tournaments, which are 12 strongest tournaments in Europe. Therefore, several top European contestants played in the Croatian Open. Tibor Pocsai, a 6-dan player from Hungary, European champion from 1987 and a multiple Hungarian champion dominated the tournament and took the title of Croatian Open Champion with 5 straight wins. This tournament is the third this year which the powerful Hungarian has won, the first two being the Hungarian Open and the Slovenian Open, both held in the second half of April. The Croatian Open Championship was, in addition, a qualifying tournament for the part in the final of Croatian Singles Championship, the so-called "Tournament of the Six". The candidates for this championship had been thus selected in four categories. Along with Zoran Mutabžija 5-dan, Mladen Smud 2-dan and Velimir Kuhar 5-dan which have qualified prior to the Croatian Open, by playing in the Croatian Open three more players qualified in the strongest category - the seniors: Sead Bačevina 2-dan, Daniel Zrno 3-kyu i Ismet Alibašić 1-dan. The Tournament of the Six will be held in October this year. In addition to Toyota and IGS-Pandanet, which are the general sponsors of European Go Tour, the organizers wish to thank
Jamnica, Franck and
Zagreb Tourist Board,
which have supplied the contestants with their quality products. Throughout the weekend, the contestants could enjoy the natural water Jana, various juices and various snacks, namely the Tip Top sticks and pizza flavored Tip Top. Many thank you's to all sponsors who made this tournament possible, and also to our host
Hotel Porin,
which gave us a home and supported the tournament.
